LinkedIn for Your Job Search

Writer: J. MallaisJ. Mallais

Since writing this Job Search Tip about LinkedIn back in April 2022, I have continued to see LinkedIn help my clients make connections and learn about new positions around the world. The fact is, LinkedIn remains the quintessential professional social network, especially for those in the international school community.

Not only can you remain connected with former colleagues and friends you met at workshops & conferences around the world, but you can add those with whom you've interviewed and also follow international schools & their leaders with whom you want to work in the future.

But LinkedIn has so much more to offer. Read on for more tips on how to maximize and leverage this job search tool.

HOW TO CREATE A COMPELLING PROFILE:

  • Starting with your photo, I'd recommend a different headshot than your CV. You can also add a coloured background to help it stand out from the white background of most LinkedIn headshots.

  • Add the green photo frame #Opentowork to let connections and recruiters know you're searching for a new position.

  • Create an eye-catching banner in Canva or PicCollage that tells people who you are and what you're looking for and upload it as your cover photo - this is precious real estate rarely used by LI users.

  • Update your Education, Experience, and Certifications sections to reflect the latest additions from your CV. Pro Tip: use dates that will help people see your contracts in terms of years rather than months, ie. July to June = 1 year, rather than using July to August = 1 year and 2 months.

  • Use your About section to describe your strengths, unique talents, and educational philosophy. How do you think students learn best? What kind of classroom do you create? What kind of role do you play on a team? What school values would fit you best?

  • If you don't have the knack for writing your own content, no worries! You can re-post other's articles with a comment that describes what's important to you as an educator. Did you read someone else's post and find it enlightening? Re-post it with a comment on what you found most interesting.

  • If you do end up writing your own posts, pin your articles to your Featured section to help people easily find them.

With these tips, you'll be making connections and showing the world what kind of educator you are in no time. Better yet, you may just find your next school and position, thanks to all that LinkedIn has to offer - and it's free!
